Chapter 24

A Consensually Good Time

Jaxon anxiously chewed his last semblance of a thumbnail. The activity relieved his impending stress of uncomfortably sitting on a rigid metal chair in a stuffy, windowless room. The two-way mirror taunted him by reflecting his own nervousness. He regained his composure, sat up straight, and arrogantly stroked his jaw.

The door opened, and the sheriff walked in, emitting a potent scent of woodsy pine cologne. He cleared his throat and took a seat. “I’m Sheriff Pete Michaels. Do you know why you’re here, Mr. Jaxon …” He looked at his notepad. “Anoki?”

“No idea.” They could not pin shit on him, so he answered with a smug, chin-up gesture.

“We have a couple of witnesses who reported seeing you with a young woman, Lilith Grainger, a few weeks ago. You and Yelena Summer. Do you remember that encounter?”

He felt a guiltiness creep into his facial expression and shifted in his chair. He had thought Lilith might be too young for their purpose, and now flinched to think that age could lead to their downfall. “Yeah, we met a chick named Lilith. Not much to talk about. Why? Is something wrong with meeting new people?”

The sheriff sat stoic and silent.

“Look, I swear to God, man … we picked her up … and I know that sounds bad, but we picked her up and took her to our place. You know, to keep her safe from any bad people out there. She was really messed up. So, we just let her sleep it off. ‘Cause you know we don’t take advantage of that kind of situation.” He paused and looked to the sheriff for acknowledgement regarding the thoughtfulness.

“Mmm-hmph. What else?”

“In the morning, we woke up and hung out for a while.”

“What do you mean by hung out?” He scribbled into his note pad with each posed question.

“We smoked a little. I know that’s legal here. And we … um …” He wanted to be as truthful as possible because he did not know the witnesses, nor how much information they had given the sheriff. Weighing the consequences of lying, he went half-truth. “We hooked up. But I swear to God, man, she said she was old enough, and it was definitely consensual!”

“When you say you hooked up … does that mean you had sex?”

“Yes.”

“The three of you had sex?”

“Yes, but it was one hundred percent con-sens-ual.” He lengthened the word, emphasizing its meaning.

“And what happened next, Mr. Anoki?”

He sat back in his chair and looked skyward, thinking of the order of events. “She left. By the way, the only reason I haven’t asked for a lawyer is I got nothing to hide.” He opened his hands, palms toward the sheriff. “Yelena can back me up on that. We just had … a consensually good time. Then she left.”

“How did she leave? Did she get a ride?”

“Maybe hitched? I don’t know. She walked out and that was it.” He felt satisfaction in his testimony. “So, I did nothing wrong, and if I’m not mistaken, this is where I get to leave now.
